Urban Decay Big Fatty Waterproof Mascara – a review

One thing I want to clarify before embarking on another mascara review is that, apart from one very expensive Dior mascara I received as a gift 10 years ago, none of the mascaras I have tried so far made it through a full day’s work. I always ended up with those under eye shadows: at best I looked tired and at worst, I looked like a panda. So my wedding day approaches and I am off on a hunt. Originally I was looking for a lipstick to match my skin tone and my dress’s colour. But since Urban Decay had an offer on, I decided to give their mascara a try. The Urban Decay counter girl was actually wearing it at the time and it hadn’t flaked at 5pm yet: this was as good a hint as I could take as to the quality of the product. The usual retail price is £16. It does give you some nice lashes, a bit of a combination of volume and length and no clumping. You do have to wipe that drop of goop from the tip of your brush first. Of course, you get better results when using an eyelash curler before application. Wedding day arrived and I managed to make it through the day without looking like a panda, even after tears during the ceremony/speech and some heavy sweating induced by energetic dancing and even headbanging. I did have some shadows under my eyes at 2am. At this point, I would be tempted to declare it the best mascara ever but… Well, I have been using this mascara for the past 6 months now and it seems to be giving me shadows under my eyes (again). It does state on the product that it would start degrading 6 months after it’s been opened. However, mine started flaking after 4 months. My verdict on this mascara would be: worth a try. It’s not the cheapest out there but it has done the job on my big day. However, you have to keep in mind that it seems to lose its waterproof power a few months after first use.

Boots No7 Time Resisting Moisturising Day Cream with SPF15 – a review

I know this product is not what I would usually consider “cheap” but I was caught out behind the security gates at Heathrow airport without any moisturiser before boarding a 30hr flight… Spending that much time on a plane without a shower is bad enough already, I just could not do without a moisturiser. As there was an offer (buy £20 worth of No7 products and get a goodie bag worth £22), I ended up buying this particular one at Boots. On first inspection, the cream appears light and not overly fragranced. It also seems to penetrate the skin pretty quickly and feels refreshing. However, it only seems to penetrate my skin: it always leaves a residue that looks like dead skin on your fingers once you have rubbed it off… Not nice. It’s alright when you are on holiday in a relatively green country, but when you get back to London’s fumes and grime, it really feels yuk. I don’t even want to think about what that goop on my face has accumulated at the end of the day. Just for that reason I would not recommend this product, even more so when you consider it would set you back by £17. I have been let down before by other No7 products like their mascara (please see other post).
